8 speed auto?
#1
Wondering for guys who have driven this for loner than 5 minutes which is all I really did with a testdrive how this works out? To me it seemed to hift an awful lot and dont remember but atleast 3 shifts to 60 which the 6 speed auto has 2 shifts in my car--and for cruising--I guess it sems more logical to have maybe a 7 speed with a 7th gear for cruising even more fuel efficient but not so many gears from 1-4 spaced so close.. any thoughts compared to the 6speed zf auto

just doing some reading on this and chyrsler signed with zf to produce these trannys themselvs for their cars--seems like there is getting a closer and closer gap in domestic and euro cars-way less reason to buy the bmw now adays except for the snob factor and design factor which for me were big in the e60 but for the f10 if you dont like the design american will look better

It works pretty well. For smooth cruising, changes are almost hardly noticeable, it's incredibly smooth. With the sports transmission (which I have) it changes fast and almost seems to short shift, i certainly can't count 8 changes from start to top. Wonderful gearbox actually, one of the real highlights.

Yeah, I have no complaints about my 8-sp AT, either......shifts are very fast and smooth. I think the 8-sp also helps with the fuel economy, too.

ZF make some wonderful automatic transmissions, they are used by a number of manufacturers including BMW. The jury is still out on whether the 8 speed helps or hinders performance, but the fuel economy benefits are clear and with the CAFE standards being what they are (and more pertinently what they will be) it's easy to see what's driving BMW and others to switch to 8 speed transmissions.
