The N54 engine is underrated - at least in the 335 i and 535i. I think that is based on the dyno tests of the 335i. Also, for a 300 hp car the 335 is way too fast. I suspect that the rating of the 740i is closer to the engine's true horsepower. I think BMW tends to be conservative with ratings. It could also be that the 300 hp rating is based on the worst conditions - i.e. hot engine in a hot climate.
I think it is too early to call whether the N55 engine is also underrated.

My Ride: 2008 535i: June 6th start build, complete June 17th, at NY Port July 5th, at dealer July 10th, took delivery Friday July 13- Plantimum Bronze/Natural Brown Leather/Light Poplar, Sport Package, Sport Auto, Active Steering, Premium Package, CWP & PDC. Dinan Performance Software 384hp & 421 ft/lbs.
Before I got my Dinan Stage II, I reviewed Dinans before and after Dyno graphs and the N54 showed 300 hp before. Different days, locations, weather and different dynos produce different results but it came up with 300 hp.
