But why? Does BMW cheat on its customers?
the numbers that bmw provide are achieveable, but not under normal conditions:
* probably with extra slim tires, instead of the 19" that a few of us have
* a gas tank that is completely empty and only uses the gas available from the tank to the engine
* probably my removing all the seats to reduce the weight

you see, the numbers that bmw provide has a competitive value. in some countries, these numbers directly translate to additional tax, which then influences the price of the car, or the road tax you pay per month. so from that point of view, they optimize the car to such an extent that the numbers are not realistic for us normal people, but then again, this is something that everyone does. Yesterday there was a article in a tabloid here in austria about how realistic these numbers are - it turns out, that the car manufacturers can be off by 53% (lexus 400h, quoted 8l, tested with over 12l). the bmws were off by about 20-25%...

i have read somewhere, according to the new congestion fee ruling, the x5 3.0d is one of the two SUVs not affected because they were 1g co2 better than what is allowed. between you and me, the x5 numbers are way off (my dad has one), but from a political and commerical point of view, this 1g co2 means that many people in london would choose the x5 over the ml or the q7...

i hope you see what i mean..

Does anyone know of an easy way to convert l/100km to mpg?

I'd like to join in this thread, but the figures mean nothing to me.

7-9l/100km is what I have. Never more never less. OK, if I set the cruise control to 90km/h and just roll, I might get sub 6.

if x is in litres/100km -> 283,75/x = y mpg
if y is in mpg -> 283,75/y = x l/100km

this is for the UK mpg, and since there are no diesels in the US, there will be no one from the US contributing with US mpg

Divide 282.48 by the consumption in l/100km and you get mpg.

e.g. 8 l/100km = 35.38

Seems I'm in the same boat then.

Mine of 26mpg converts to 10.9 l/100km.

THough I have to say that even with cruise on, at 85 mph it drops off dramatically where by on a flat road the needle is indicating mid-20s. At a steady 80, it's giving 40 ish.

I guess sticking to the speed limits would help...

(PS mine has 25,000 miles on it)
