Since a couple of days back, the map won't come on when I start the car. After ejecting the DVD and insert it again, the navigation works fine. For some minutes, then it stops reading it.... eject-insert, here we go..... no. eject-insert again.... oh yes, reading reading.... 2 hrs later - stops again.

Next day? Works fine the whole day.

Apparently the laser having problem reading the disc? Or could there be other reasons for this error?

Do you have an old DVD? I mean like an outdated "old" disk that you could try?

I'm having the same problem, but only when I get into the car after work. I'm putting it down to the heat we've been having the last week. Each time I take the disc out, let it cool by the a/c vents and put it back in, it works fine.

A little relieved to know it's not just me having issues with this. I was beginning to wonder about it for a while...

Have you tried cleaning the DVD? They can get damaged and become unreadable ... that's easier to fix than the DVD reader in your NAV. Still under warranty? Try the dealer to get a good DVD and see if that's better; maybe Navteq / BMW will replace it if it doesn't work but doesn't show obvious damage (scratches, etc.).

Thanks for all the advice - it's off to the dealer tomorrow (end of warranty this Saturday ) so I'll keep you posted.

Always better that things fail a week before warranty ends - rather than the week after !

Good luck.

MacSid I believe you're right. The problem stopped just as the heatwave faded out, but my dealer had my car re-programmed "just in case" anyway. As of Sunday last week I'm out of warranty so from now on it's gonna hurt...
