Well, Marco who started this tread was in Italy so that was the basis for me giving links to large/wide wintertires. He could use wheels down to 16" for wintertires on his 530d.
Robert J. of course has a point in narrow tires cutting through deeper snow.
I need 17" for the 535dt and also must consider Load index, so I go with 17" 225/50 LI94.

Thanks, Lasseb, for your reply, at least logical.

It seems I am a crazy guy that wants 245-40-18 tyres at any costs... I got the same comments when 3 years ago I was buying 235-45-17 winter tyres for my previous BMW 530...everybody was suggesting to use 16 inches instead! I bought the 17 and was happy driving in the snow for three years in the Alps around Mont Blanc.
These comments are the same as when I got a computer with Windows XP in 2001... Everybody was saying I was foolish because Win 98 was better....Now everyone has XP and will never chance for the next one.

I do know that the narrow the tyres are the better they are for the snow...I drove a Citroen Dyane 6 20 years ago and went everywhere in the snow with my summer tyres (probably 125-70-16 or something like that) but I cannot use them now on my 530...

My initial question was where can I find the tyres and wether anybody else had the same problem. That is all.
Thanks again to everybody.

If I had been able to fit 145/70-15 I would have fitted em. But the 9-3 SS Aero had upgraded breaks so I could not fit the 185/65-15 that I had on the previous one. They where why better than the 225:s.

Take a look at a WRC car next time they run a snow rally, I don't think you will find that many of em using 245/40-18.

The orignial ones for 525i is 225/55-16. The 215/60 are in the 5% range so they are allowed, atleast here in Sweden.

Dear Robert J, my 530d Touring Attiva comes standard with 18" wheels, and I do not find so strange to use this diameter also for winter tyres....It is just impossible to get them because too much demand!

Hello Marco!

I think I went a little OT, I don't think you will have that big problems with 18" in your winter driving. If I remember correct you must have even snow-chains in some areas in the Alps and that are way better then all the wintertyres invented today. Your 530D needs min 16" to fit the breaks. If it had been a 535D you must have 17".

A way for you to get a set for your 18" could be to order em from Sweden. Here is 18" not to popular so they can easily be found in webshops like http://www.gummihuset.se/. I found Nokian RSi in your dimension for less than €1200 including our terrible 25% VAT.

Anyway, best luck with your search!

Regards,

Thanks Robert!

Actually in my car homologation book I can use only 245/40/18 or 225/50/17 , all other tyres are illegal...therefore I cannot use 16" anyway...In any case I do not want to buy a new set of wheels.

I do not know about Nokian tyres, look to me more a mobile phone then a tyre...joking!

Are they good quality???

Actually, here in Italy, Pirelli Winter 240 Sottozero is considered the best and this is what I am looking for.

I ordered them before I got my car but up to now I am still waiting!

Here up north is Nokian and Gislaved considered the absolute top duo in wintertyres. Every winter is the big auto mags here testing winter tyres and the Nordic made ones allways win.

Pirelli have one called Carving and they get placed in the middle in the tests. Michelin gets quite good testresults and Continental gets better and better. Conti bought Gislaved some years ago and it seems like they have taken some lessons.

If you get a set of Nokian I think you will get mych better tyres for real winter. The Pirellis you have ordered might be better on bare asfalt.

I allways go for Nokians or Gislaved for winter. My idea is that it's impossible to make better winter tyres if you don't have real snow and ice to test em on. But remember that my references for wintertyres are from real ice and snow.

I have got a new 530d Touring with 245/40/18 run flat tires. It seems impossible to get winter tires with these dimensions...even not run flat! According my tire shop the reason is that in Germany winter tires becames mandatory this year...But I am in Italy and I need them!
Does somebody has the same problem?
Ciao,

After reading the Road and Track review of the new run flats from Pirelli - I would also agree -
I'm ordering these from 1010Tires-maybe they'll ship to Europe for you ....

Pirelli Winter 240 Sottozero - 245/40R18 (Run Flat) MIRS 93 V
Last Friday I finally got my brandnew 2006 BMW 535d Touring delivered at my friendly dealer.
I ordered it with a set of 18" Pirelli Winter Tires on 124-Rims. Unfortunately this dimension is currently sold out nearly everywhere , whatever Run-Flat or not. It seems that Pirelli just started to produce another series, which comes to delivery in late January only.

So I deciced to accept as a Winter Set-up Run-Flats with 225/50/17, which seems even more reasonable here in Switzerland and next spring I will decide whatever wheel may be chosen as a Summer Set-up. I may even mount to 19" Hamann's Anniversary wheels on non Run-Flats.

Nevertheless, as far as I can say so far, my actual Winter Set-up still allows a smooth but also sporty ride (...even with RFTs).

Cheers,

Ciao
