Long story and covered here beofre in depth, might find more info via the seacrh option.
But my understanding of the situation in a nutshell is, BMW have to get TUV in Germany for all cars produced, this included the wheel set up.
It is an expensive and drawn out procedure and they did not do so for the E61 with a staggered set up, so it is not offered as an option.
There is however no reason why the staggered wheel set up cannot be used and a number of members have used the sedan set up on the tourer.

His knowledge is extensive and if you have any lingering doubts a pm to him should allay them.

Pardon my ignorance KAF, but what is "TUV". I searched the foum but didn't get a hit - I suspect "TUV" is too short. Is it a government approval of some kind for wheel fitment? Thx.
Mine has the CSL wheels 19 x 8.5 with 40mm offset and 245 35 19 tires with no issues (so far).
Jed, sorry to hear the Rials are crap, they were one of the wheels I was considering. What's the issue with them?
OP, I know the staggered set up looks better, but the car will handle better with a square set up.

I disagree. A staggered set-up will make the car handle even better. Whether it will work or not on a Touring is another story, but I've done both on my xi and staggered hands down handles better.

I have a set of factory 43MM offset 135's in my garage 18 x 8 so you're calculations for the front look right. I think I read somewhere (velocity motorsports) that with the 45MM offset on the 19 by 9.5's they sell you need a 15MM spacer so it seems you may have solved the riddle.

OK so i've done a bit more digging and realoem.com specs only symmetrical (i.e. non-staggered) wheels for all varieties of the Touring, both all wheel and rear wheel drive, North American and European (with the exception of the just released M5 Touring which is spec's with staggered wheels).
Also, there is no difference between the wheels spec'd for the rear wheel drive touring and the wheels spec'd for the rear wheel drive sedan. so logically the wheels spec'd for the all wheel drive sedan (style 124 18 x 8 (ET43) and 18 x 9 (ET55)) should fit on the all wheel drive wagon. Carrything this forward to the next step the 19 x 8.5 (ET40) 19 x 9.5 (ET45) VB3's
should fit as well.
So do I order them ....
