Whenever it rains and I open the trunk lid, I get a dump of water from the left, driver, side near the area of the rear window directly into the trunk's carpet. The only way to prevent this is to stop the vertical movement of the tailgate and have it stop a few steps before the top limit to drain the water before allowed to go all the way up. Is there a drain that is plugged up? I don't see a drain hole beneath the tailgate like the car doors. What gives?

Although I'm don't know much about the E61, you might want to look at the following:

Check where the water is collecting by opening the trunk slowly.

I have no problem with the trunk, but I have the same problem with both rear doors. Water collects over the rubber seal on the top edge of the door, and flows on the rear seat when I open the door. There is a hole in the seal that should allow the water to drain, but for some reason it does not drain. You might have a similar situation with the tail gate.
