HI guys! When making VEHICLE CHECK in accordance with on-board comp notification last week, service man announced, that turbo is getting died soon . When I asked - whether it's normal - to change turbo after 2 years and 60K km use only - he answered - yes - IT IS! As he said - it's common thing to change turbo after 50-80K km use. Warranty ended 1.5 monts ago... What do you think about?

Complete nonsense, I've been around a lot of I6 diesels from BMW and it is not normal to have to replace your turbo this soon.

Valid reasons could be:
- ingestion of foreign objects
- Continuous misuse, i.e. flooring cold etc.

Ask him how he knows it is on the way out:
- Sounds?
- Leakage?

To illustrate my point: I just replaced my turbo as a preventative measure at 230.000 KM's...

Good luck with the issue!

Your turbo should not need replacing now!

I have had 5 BMW turbo diesels from 2001 onwards and used to do A LOT of driving. I never had the Turbo fail on it own.

- E46 320d -- from new, 3 years 140k KM, no problems with Turbo
- E46 320d -- from new, 2 years 125k KM, no problems with Turbo
- E60 520d -- from new, 1,5 years 85k KM, no problems with Turbo
- E60 525d -- from new, 1 year 45k KM, no problems with Turbo
- E61 530d)-- used, 1 year 115k KM, Turbo died because the Manifold broke and killed the Turbo in the process -- but Turbo itself was fine before that.

So your BMW dealer should be giving you a very clear reason why it needs replacing, especially if the car is still running well. Good luck

Service man said, that turbo-charger pushes oil outside too much. So, it may crash all around, when get broken. AS for me - I didn't feel any unusual things in use, exept one time at last week - very clean and loud whistling for around one minute, when engine stayed running at inner car park for a while. It was obvoius unusual sound. BTW - when making car check at last year - service guy showed me intercooler air-supply pipe (is it the very MANIFOLD?), which was covered by fat grease. He said - be ready for turbo change soon. At that day I've got 20K km only! I saw this by myself, when he lifted a car and take off cover shields. DEfinitely - I have never seen even one oil-spot at my old E39 petrol 523TOURING. So, this view impressed me a lot As for me, no one car, especially premium ones, may contain so expensive details with 50-70 000 km reserve of use only. He said, that for long-lasting TURBO life I should keep engine running at least 3-4 minutes before stopping it ... even if I moved at 1000-1200 RPM only! ... Before I heard, that I should left engine running some time (1-3 min) after top speeds and long-lasting loads only - such as highway or "traffic-light race"...
