Hi,
I have changed them a couple of months ago. You can do it within 5 min for both sides. Just unclip the metal clip on the top-mount with a small flathead screwdriver. Then you can pop it of easy.
New struts: just click in place and done!
I have bought the struts from the Stabilus brand. OEM BMW also uses Stabilus.

by the way: Make sure somebody else will hold the trunk door for you when you pop-off the strut. Otherwise it will fall down on your head. One remaining strut will not hold the trunk door open....

If you don't have a third hand to help, you can always use that plastic support beam that's under the cargo mat. Pretty hefty and can/will hold the weight of the rear hatch.
