I've run T1-S on another car. They felt very good and are well thought of.
I was surprised to see though, that in Car and Driver's latest tire test, the Proxes T1-R was in 8th place. The test was conducted on an E90. The absolute best tire was the Goodyear F1 GS-D3. Link is here:

The Yokohama Advan Neova AD07 was the fastest on the road course and had the best braking, and was usable in the wet. It's the OEM tire on the Elise, and that thing grips like crazy. They don't have it in the size my car takes, but it might be available for other 5 Series setups.

Advertising and/or money is sometimes a key factor in some circumstances when it comes to ratings

Every tire company usually has nothing but the best to say about Toyo.

Yeah, but it wasn't a subjective test. It was roadholding results (skidpad) and roadcourse times. All administered under controlled conditions at TireRack's test track on a single car - one E90. I agree, the Toyo tires have a cult following and are used for racing by many. It's hard to argue with the results of their test though.

I've been looking into tyre costs in the UK and toyo TR1s are generally held to be excellent quality and are also cheaper than the pirelli pzero neros (front) and goodyear f1's (rear) I have on my car.
I will probably go with them when I need to change
