Only thing I can suggest is removing the rear right hand side speaker cover, dropping out the speaker, stripping the tape off the loom (as best you can) and trying to find the broken boot release wire and repairing it insitu. I believe that the lid release signal will be in the loom that is closet to the center of the car in the pair that you will see behind the speaker. It was in this area that I found the breaks. I also believe that the wires you are looking for are quite small gauge and are brown with colored stripes. I think there's a plug socket break just under the boot spoiler for the signal from the switch on the wiper.

I forgot how good this forum is! I've had no problems with my car since the early niggles and I've just enjoyed driving it. Then I started getting the right number plate light off warning and after that the remote not working and rear glass not opening, the bluetooth disconnecting and reconnecting - and disconnecting.

I wasn't really convinced when I was told that it was probably broken wires in the loom from the tailgate. The car's five years old but only 80k kms. The local specialist has given up trying to repair the individual wires and taken it to the local dealer on my behalf to protest to BMW for a contribution towards the repair. He reckons this problem has been a running sore for years with this model but BMW just haven't done anything about it.

After reading some of the posts, I'm terrified of what it's going to cost. Seems a bit ridiculous that such a stupid design fault carries on and on without being put right.

My rear glass button and rear wiper have both failed (all fuses fine) so I guess this is 'broken wiring' again ...

Why has this not become a recall (safety) issue as the wires seem destined to fail on just about every E61... What has to go wrong on a BMW for them ever to repair a known design fault free of charge ????

Two questions for the group:

1. UK Issue only - Is a non-functional rear wiper on an E61 an MOT failure issue ??? (I was planning on just making sure that the car was fully cleaned, and assuming they will never check .. but would be nice to know ..)

2. How do I get the glass panel open (to do the wire repairs) if the wire to the panel has already been broken ... ? (If I read this correctly I need to get the glass panel open to access the wiring ...

Thanks ..

530d - 2005 - 120K
I started having problems with intermittent connection for the left license plate light. Have checked bulb - was ok. Thanks to that topic did next checks and here we go. Left side was pretty ok, just one cable with a bit cracked isolation. Right side - disaster

Now I've glass lid opening randomly, not reacting to push button, next opening when I start the engine. Have dismantled spoiler measured that button is closing the circuit. Lid opens each time when I connect and disconnect connector. Tomorrow will check wires going to the car. Wired. Will post results.

It was press to open button for glass lid. Today I tested it with multimeter and found it doesn't work correctly. It was a little night mare to take it off the car, I had to go to a friend of mine who is actually quite experienced with BMW. The only way was to cut it with flex and brake into pieces. I must say without his help I would not be able to get it done. . When I visited BMW to purchase new spare (24 Euro) they told me its a known problem. No comments. After all the new one is installed and all works perfect.

Looking inside the feeling is - fragile, rather poorly designed. No wonder it brakes easy
