I've been finding - on cold mornings in particular - that the gas struts that lift the tailgate on my E61 don't have enough ooomph to lift all the way ... they kind of give up a way before the end. Anybody else had this problem?

There have been a thread about torsionbars that have given up in the cold. It's just to go to your dealer and have em replaced.
The setting of height in the iDrive is for models equipped with the electrostatic open/close function.

I don't have electric tailgate operation - so I guess it sounds like a dealer visit. The temperature that things get a bit slow is high 20's - low 30s deg F. That seems wrong to me. Thanks for the feedback.

20" Hartge Nova 7. Previously 19" staggered 172s
The struts are not meant to lift to full height unassisted, it stops them smashing your tailgate into the roof of multi-storeys. The last bit should require a gentle push to full height.
It is bound to be more sluggish in the cold as it is damped by oil viscosity.
Compare to others at the dealers to see if yours is below par.
