Sport suspension is a must on BMWs, I bet you if the designers had to pick one or the other, they would surely pick the sport suspension, I have driven both and it makes a BIG difference, it just doesnt feel like a BMW without. In the U.S. when you get the sport package it includes the active suspension, this is amazing, there is NO body sway around turns, its shocking.

Don't agree with your pov - if sports suspension was that important to BMW they would make it standard. Fact is that it isn't. In Germany only a minority of cars are ordered with sports suspension - that's despite the joy of having no speed restriction. Its all a question of taste and preference. Exactly why BMW offers consumers a choice.

Good news for you 18" are bumpless perfect fit!
M pack is the best value/money enhancement delivered by BMW, so original. Good luck!

If you are afraid of the M sport stiff suspension, get the sport-normal (instead of 2cm drop with M, it is "only" 1,5 cm) then go for the DD and get the M pack spoilers, but then you have to buy separatelly the wheels, the door sills with ///M logo AND you will not have the Anthrazite roof, can be retrofit but at least 1000$!!! I miss that...

It is a very personal choice.

I have normal suspension on my E61 and the ride is still harsh with non RFT's.

Out of choice I would go for sports next time, the ride is going to be harsh anyway, might as well get the best handling at least !

Its interesting that on uk cars if you upgrade to 19's (type 172) the tyres are not run flats. Neither for that matter is the M5 on it's 19's. What type of tyres do you have? I assume your wheel upgrade is also 172's seems odd the put run flats on Canadian 19's and not here in Europe.
My mistake! The dealer told me they were RFs and I never bothered to confirm that - but they are not - they are Conti Sport Contact 2's on 172s and there is no little "RSC" symbol on them.

Sorry, but don't agree. Every increase in specs means a more expensive vehicle. My 62 year old mother-in-law does not need a sport suspension on her BMW to drive down to the shops or her office and to the Saturday night dinner party at 50kmh. So, why should she pay for it, she gets all the ride and performance she needs on the standard suspension. And of course the softer ride and higher car suits her. Doesn't mean that her car is poor on the open road, just not up with the sport setup.

In my opinion the M sport package on the touring is great value, especially when compared with the price of individual BMW accessories, eg a set of 123 or 124 wheels costs more than half the price of the entire M sport package.

How important is the sport package and how much of a difference does it make? Also, has anyone just put on 18inch wheels and what does that do to the ride? I'm thinking of foregoing the sport package and buying a set of BMW 18inch wheels on eBay.
I used to have an E60 with 17" first and later I put on it 18" the ride was of the same comfort but the handling and the direction control over the car (at least the feeling) was higher with 18". On that car I did not have sport suspension and the car was to wavy.
Now I got an E61 MSport, meaning m outside/inside look + M sport suspension. Here the feeling about the handling and overall control of the car is beautiful. Might be a bit hard but really you have fun.

Sorry, but don't agree. Every increase in specs means a more expensive vehicle.

Plus, in many countries the list price of the vehicle is used to calculate tax liability if your company provides the car.

So keeping the initial spec low to keep the price down makes the car more attractive to fleet buyers and individuals on company benefits.

The new owner can then spec up the car without it triggering so much tax pain.
