Hi Ben, I own a E61 520d but this week my car is stop for service, so the dealer gave me a E61 525d.
Man what a difference !
pros 525d vs. 520d:
- great engine confort;
- no vibrations;
- very smooth and progressive acceleration;
- excellent confort in the cabin.
cons:
- according to OBC consumption lies around 8.9 Litres/100 Km (around 31.7 UK mpg) on mixed highway running at 130-140 Km/h (around 70-75 mph) about 75% of the time and suburbs for remaining.
There is no way to see if OBC indications are correct or not.
Assuming that figure to be correct, it is worse than my 520d: about this one I took note with liters brimmed and distance covered and calculations told me the car needs 7.7 Litres/100 Km (around 36.6 UK mpg) in the same conditions.
I have to point that my 520d ran 18000 Km old but 525d is only 5000 Km: I guess consumption figure for the last can only improve.
My advice?
Go for 525d, no doubt !

I should go for the best deal you can get. The 520d E61 is a new model so you may have to pay a nearly new price in the short term. I would personally go for cheapest and oldest 525d you can get. It'll be a great car and last for years. Having previously owned a 530d and now a 535d I haven't noticed any difference in the running costs. The insurance premium is the same as is fuel cons and servicing.

depending on how many miles you do... lots of miles then I would say the 520D, not so many A older and cheaper 525D will offset the difference in economy. And IMHO the 520D lags not far behind the 525D upto about 70mph, however above that speed there is quite a big difference in favour of the 525D.

You should get a 525d. I will definately be noticably faster and smoother.
It is often misleading to compare peak horsepower and peak torque figures because these figures are peak values. The importand point is that with the 525d you will have a higher power and torque value througout the rev range. Remember the quoted horsepower and torque figures are peak values which are only obtained at one certain rpm in the rev range.
But test drive both a 520d and a 525d and see what you think. Remember to test drive the cars proparly put your foot down.
Also forget about the Audi A6 its interior is disapointing, their equivalent engines do not perform as well as BMWs, and you only have front wheel drive or 4 wheel drive options and an Audi will not drive like a BMW. You may as well buy a VW Passat or Skoda instead of an Audi.

I don't see any reason for the new 177bhp 520d to be peaky; I have 520d (163bhp) running at 212bhp and the remap smooths everything out.
Whilst we're on the subject, can anyone say what the differences are between the new 525d (197bhp) and the 530d apart from power? Is the 525d just a detuned 530d or does the 525d's 3,000cc engine have a smaller turbo? I'm interested to know whether the difference is just mapping or actual physical 'hardware'.
