I have eibach pro kit on my E61. It lowered 20mm at front and once the rear has auto levelling system (hydraulic system), i took it to my local bmw dealer to lower the rear 20mm too. The look is perfect and the front has almost the same comfort than before (oem sport suspension), but the rear is a real pain. At lower speeds, the damping on the bumps is good, but after 100kph (62mph) even the little road bumps seems that you drive by a huge road hole. I think that the problem is that the rear shocks has a very low travel distance, and it hit to the end of the suspension easily. I really like the look of the rear lowered but i cannot live with it like this. Does anyone of you have the same problem?

Hi Tiago

If you have RFTs, then that's a common problem and it's much more noticeable on a lowered car.

When I had mine lowered, I can recall that I was scared by the results especially at the rear when cornering, fast or slow, on a bumby road. (with stock Potenzas RFT)

Hi Tiago,

Nick' s right. And remember: Already the stock suspension of the E61 is tighter than that of a stock E60.

I had the opportunity to drive a lowered E61 against a "normal" one, both with 17" RFT. I came to the same conclusion than you. I like a sporty adjustment with a car (and the looks of course) but in the case of the E61 together with RFT it's too much, as you said especially in the rear.

I doubt that switching from RFT to non-RF alone is enough to reduce the problem sigificantly.

I have the oem 167 wheels at home and i'm just waiting for the tires to mount them. I hope that with non-rft it will improve the ride comfort, or i will have to raise the rear a bit to minimize the problem.

Boa Tarde, Tiago

I have a 535D Touring with DD and AS.

Unfortunately I did not order the Sports suspension and I have the Std one. To me, it is too soft.

I took the car to the BMW dealer, and then to a suspension specialist (Bilstein +Eilbach). None of them was able to help.

The hydraulic self levelling rear system of the e61s, seems not to admit an improvement on suspensions, when combined with the Dynamic Drive stabilizing active bars...

I am confused and see no solution in the short term.

By the way, I have got impressed by your ECU Remapping. ?360 hp!

Mine was also improved to a mere 330!

Those guys from Vilauto Competicoes seem to know their job

Kind regards from Spain

I had a Mercedes E class coupe a few years ago and with its silky smooth ride, I developed the 'bright idea' of lowering it. I bought eibach springs and lowered it. I remember driving out of the workshop onto the same 'smooth' road I had travelled on a zillion times thinking 'OMG, what have I done'. One week later I took it back for the original springs to be replaced. They had been disposed of. I immediately ordered new MB ones and had them replaced the next day as I could not even bring myself to drive it.

MORAL? By far the worst thing ever you can do to a car of this calibre is to start lowering and tinkering with the suspension. Leave that to the 'Fast and Furious' crew. Do you notice how they admire your ride while driving their Jap rust buckets?

Look at suspensions on the M3 and M5 and learn.

Sorry to be harsh but the E60s are grown up cars and you have to treat them with respect. In fact, because they are such big cars, they don't even look right lowered or squatting anyway!!!

Most likely it is the shocks that are not up to the job causing the harsh ride, as they were not designed to work with the shorter springs. If you had standard suspension, you could switch to aftermarket shocks, but seeing you have the self-levelling system, there isn't a way around it unfortunately...

In general, with just lowering springs OEM shocks will wear out sooner, so it is always best to go with coilover system(KW, Bilstein, H&R) or a matched spring+shock kit (ACS sport suspension, Dinan, etc).

Hey Tiago - would you mind posting a picture or two of your lowered E61? I think the RFTs is the problem, as was stated. Did the BMW shop know how to lower the rear 20mm without too much hassel?? I've asked about this here in California and they don't seem to know how to mod the hydraulics on this car.

I made the same question to the local BMW dealer, here in Spain.

I have Dynamic Drive and Active drive on too. They introduced my car,s platform number into the software system but no solution arises.

The rear hydraulic self levelling system combined with the active stabilizing bars (DD unit) makes them not to know what to recommend.

Unforntunately I did not order the Sports suspension when new. Just the std. one. Now I can?t change.
