You're spot on, maybe it's a scandinavian thing danes and swedes love their wagons, in Sweden the Volvo V70 is by far the best sellling car.
I think, in general, America is about fads - in the 70s it was all about wagons, the 80's minivans, the 90s SUVs, now - crossover (mix of SUV and wagon). This is silly really. The E61 is very attractive an capable, if it would only come in more than one trim level here. Geez, we here in the states have never even SEEN an M5 sports wagon before and that's a shame, because that must be a blast to drive.

The E61 is a very capable platform but unfortunately in BMW's infinite wisdom, they chose to only offer it as an xi in the USA. That decision alone has cost them market share for the Touring. The previous generation of 5 (E39) was available in the USA as a rear wheel drive V-8 and received enormous amounts of praise as it was one of the sportiest cars in the segment. Perhaps BMW will learn from the poor sales of the E61 and make the new model (F11) available in the USA in trim other than the xi.

My Ride: 2010 M5 alpine white, black full leather, etc.
Another stupid move down the economic "death spiral" by the boys in Germany. They are forgetting about their tried and true buyers; those that have repeatedly bought into the BMW tradition solidly expanding the buyer base into what it is today. Meanwhile, they substitute strange, wildly expensive crossover vehicles for customers they don't even have as yet ( i.e. the X6 and the GTs). I guess the four door sedan is next on the hit list.

I love my 08 E61 and might buy it t the end of the lease.
I do think stopping production is a mistake.

I the us its seems that people have low self esteem and have to drive "cool cars" or big ass SUV's
But it may also be because of what you guys pay for your cars in the States! In Norway we pay about $100 000,- for a new 520d with all the nifty extras... And that is the cheapest one!
The Government gets a lot of money from carowners here!!!
Edit: Another example is the gas/diesel price here... One litre of gasoline cost about NOK 11,50 (this morning) and one litre of diesel about NOK 9,50.
That would be about $1,86/litre for gasoline and $1,53/litre for diesel.
If i remember correctly one gasoline is 3,8 litres. You do the math!
