Why does it seem as if nobody in Europe uses Dunlop's wintersport M3 tire. It has one of the best reputations in the states as a winter tire for BMW's or so I thought.

Erm, look at the post above yours -- I'm using them and they are what BMW recommended to me! My wife is also having them fitted to her BMW. The Dunlops recently received the best reviews in a well known German car magazine. So I think they are pretty popular, maybe just not here in the forum?

the m3 was the standard winter tire that bmw would sell here in austria, but with runflats now a must with most of the cars (must in the sense that most of the cars don't have a spare wheel, so therefore they need runflats), bmw has moved away from just offering the m3. i had the m3 on my merc - they were great. I thought i am getting them on the my 19" winter, turns out i got d3 - don't ask me what hte difference is...

Yep, the Dunlop SP Wintersport 3D was on top of the rankings in both German (ADAC) and Dutch (ANW tests, together with the Michelin Primacy Alpin PA3.

Still looking for more details, but the Michelins don't seem available in the 245/40 R18 dimensions (yet). Dunlop is available in a wide array width, height & R15-R20. Price of the Dunlops seems better too.

I've been looking for some more information on the difference between the Dunlop Wintersport M3 vs. Dunlop Winter Sport 3D too. Not quite sure what the real difference is however. Both are "high performance" apparently.

The Dunlop Winter Sport 3D has won tests in both Germany (ADAC) and the Netherlands (ANW so they seem like a good choice. (other winner was Michelin Primacy Alpin PA3 but those don't seem to come in the 245/40 R18 dimension ?)

Anyone know what the real difference between the 3D and M3 Dunlop tyres is ?
That would allow me to narrow my options a bit

Thanks !

Regardless of how much tyre technology has moved on I would still think that narrower tyres will grip better in snow and ice due to their higher contact pressure. Plus they're cheaper!

at winter I use M5 e34 8x17 + 8,5x17 wheels (225/50 + 245/45), they are extra light and strong, look quite brutal too :-) summer wheels are Breyton Softline 8,5x18

+1 Dunlop Winter Sport M3's seem to get the best rating here by BMW owners in the states as far as 18" tires and they are one of the only manufacturers to make a 275/35-18. 245/40-18 is probably a better size all the way around but since my rims are staggered, I might as well have wider tires in the rear since I can't rotate them anyway. Not much of a difference in performance and the wider tires look better.
You must have got the only set of 275/35/18's. I wanted that sizing as well but ended up w/the 245/40's all around.
