Hi,
two winters with Pirelli Sottozero 245/40 18" already donewith my 530d! Gone to ski rersort in the Alps and traveled in bad snow...always feel safe.
Perfect, fantastic performances, don't listen to the old legends that large tyres are not good for winter...It is no a 4x4 but the feeling is very near....

... and I'm in Augsburg the whole week with no chance to visit the "Welt".
What pity, I passed by Augsburg two times today, going and returning from Ulm. If I would have known that perhaps we could have meet for a beer.

had before on my m3 225 17 inch from michelin with the nails in the tires. had no complains very nice grip .only that i was very lucky ingermany since i discovered at the time i was in holland one tire was about to blow. now on the 525 i got 205 16 inch with nails goodyear ultra grip. did not had a change to test them in the snow or ice. but they are not runflats so need to look for runflats wintertires. dont have ajack or space for a spare tire.

goodluck with ur tires. greetings from sweden

hi folks,

this week i wanted to buy some winter tyres for my e61 535d m-sport which, hopefully, will be delivered next week. since bmw does not deliver the car with winter tyres and i want some 19'' rims for the summer i needed to buy some 245/40 18 winter rubber for the m-sport rims.

and now the funny thing: i contacted 4 tyre dealers and 3 of them wanted to disencourage me from buying that dimension for winter tyres. they argued that, as it was possibly correct 10 years ago, smaller winter tyres, are better.

a short search in the internet, however, revealed that today, this is not true anymore for a modern winter tyre.

therefore i would be interested what the majority of the forum members drive in winter and whether you ever had bad experiences with larger dimensions.
Gentlemen,

I've been considering the same options. That is continue to use the M135 rims for winter purposes and buying myself a set of M172's next spring/summer
(I hear salesafter.de delivers great service ?).

Still figuring out what winter tyres I should put on the M135's rims...

Sor far I read about 3 possibilities in this thread:
-> Goodyear Ultragrip RunOnFlat
-> Pirelli Sottozero RunOnFlat
-> Continental TS 810
Any other good winter-tyre suggestions for the M135-rims ? Currently I still have the Goodyear NCT5 tyres fitted (245 40 R18 93 Y)

Greetings,
Tom.

You sure you want to go for RunOnFlat? I'm using GY Ultra Grip 3 non-RFL and I am happy with them. Haven'y tried them on snow/ice yet, though...

I am using my M135s on Dunlop Winter Sports Non-RFT. Most of my winter travel is done in cold and wet conditions on the motorway. I have also used them in snow and perfectly dry conditions. They can also be driven to 240km/h, i.e. more than the normal 210km/h winter tyre limit, which is useful for me on the autobahn. These tyres were recommended to me by my dealer as they are a good all-rounder in winter. They have served me well so far and can recommend them to anyone else. (That said, in Belgium you probably can go for the slightly cheaper max 210 km/h version )

Why does it seem as if nobody in Europe uses Dunlop's wintersport M3 tire. It has one of the best reputations in the states as a winter tire for BMW's or so I thought.

+1 Dunlop Winter Sport M3's seem to get the best rating here by BMW owners in the states as far as 18" tires and they are one of the only manufacturers to make a 275/35-18. 245/40-18 is probably a better size all the way around but since my rims are staggered, I might as well have wider tires in the rear since I can't rotate them anyway. Not much of a difference in performance and the wider tires look better.
