I would like to add 4 mud flaps to my xiT and was wondering if they are an easy DIY installation or do I need to have the dealer do it.

I would spend the $85 bucks again rather than worry with the hassle. I used a good BMW shop rather than the dealer. Saved a few $$.

For mudflaps one must do holes to the inside fenders.

What is the benefit you are looking for?

What is the benefit you are looking for?
The custom OEM flaps from BMW match pre-drilled holes. I believe only one rivet was required and it came with a seal.

Flaps keep rocks and mud off the paint, especially with the Sport package which is lower and has wider tires. Flaps also offer some protection from rocks and stones to the windshields of those following you.

It is a straightforward job to fit mudflaps. If you can take a wheel off and be able to use a drill then you can do it. The OEM flaps come with all the bits. When you buy them ask the stealer for the fitting instructions. He will print them off for you.

I think they look good. They don't ground and keep the side of the car a bit cleaner.

True, the instructions are straightforward, but by the time you get through chocking, jacking, torquing lug nuts, etc., it was worth the $85 for me this time around. I've always used them and usually install them myself, just not this time.

It is an easy job if you are capable of jacking the car up and taking a wheel off!!
Yes, you have to drill a couple of holes, but you are drilling into plastic, so its no sweat.
If you want to, you can avoid taking the front wheels off by using a short drill and just turning the drill bit by hand. The plastic wing liner is soft. The rear ones are a little closer so I took the wheels off for this.
You have to remove existing plastic rivets. Just push the centre pins through into the wing cavity. You won't find them again, but the kit comes with new ones.
Clean the wing bottoms thoroughly before you start to allow the adhesive pads to grip properly.
The flaps are best fitted in nice warm weather or a heated garage to get them to mould nicely to the contours.
When you buy the flaps, as mentioned previously, get the $tealer to print out the fitting instructions as they don't come with the kit. I have a UK set I can scan for you if you want to have a look first.
Contrary to the earlier post, you can ground them when taking dips at speed. My front ones ground occasionally. On my E46 Touring, it was the rears that grounded!!
