As one of my very first modifications, I wanted to hardwire my V1 in my '09 E61. This radar detector has become indispensible in my Porsche, and now with it stored and this 535 being so damn fast, I had no option but to wire up the V1 - and fast!

After doing some research, it became apparent that tapping into power from overhead console is not as easy as it used to be. I read about issues with voltage changes setting off the sensors in the panoramic sunroof, so decided to avoid.

I found this excellent link here:

http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60-m5-e6...splay-pics.html

And followed it exactly.

One easy thing to do was the power and ground. Just tap into the green for power, and the brown for ground, and you are all set. Nice and handy switched power, so the V1 fires up every time I start the car. Perfect.

Pulling down the panel in the passenger foot well was super easy:

Grabbing the power was easy too:

I might give it a try Used to run it just to the 12v socket down there and run a power line up the A arm to the head liner...

That would keep my wife from knocking it out for sure...

I've been pondering this... thanks for making it easy!

How/where to you have the V1 mounted?

Chief F1 Fan - great directions, thank you. I had done some research, and it seems as though the wires are not the same with the Panoramic Sunroof on my 2009. I read that if you tap into the same power lead as you suggest, it will cause a voltage drop just enough to fault the sunroof sensor. I would have loved to have wired my V1 in the same way you did, but was nervous about causing this problem.

Cheers,
Gundo

Haha, reminds me of what I did four years ago when I got my first sports bike. Within 24 hours of owning it I lost my license for 28 days!! 143km/h on the open road while overtaking.

It was Saturday and I couldn't properly mount the V1 onto the bike as I didn't have the hardware to physically mount it at the time - I would do that on the Monday. So I gave in to the temptation of a group ride. Came up behind a Subaru Wagon, saw a gap and zipped past in third. This was the fastest bike/vehicle I'd owned to date and I didn't realise that even a part throttle opening would have you over the instant loss of license limit (40km/h over the designated speed limit) virtually instantly. Of course there was a cop with radar in the bushes, easily detectable had I had the V1 mounted.....

So you're right.... Always get that V1 mounted first... and the time you get a ticket will be when you're not using your V1...

Wow - would the V1 have helped at that speed?

I got nailed at 99mph with the V1 on, had no chance to slow. Cop was pretty tricky...

I was in a group of 7 bikes with 5 ahead of me so I'm sure I would have picked up any scatter from when he was checking the others.

But, yes, if you're "alone" on the road and the cop's using instant on, then you're toast, but at least you'll usually get the chance to drop your speed at least a little. My only ticket in a car in the last 27 years was in the Porsche, on a wide, open straight road, with virtually no other traffic, but a blanket 100km/h 62mph speed limit nevertheless. Cop was tucked behind an oncoming car using instant on, but with no traffic, I didn't get the chance to pick up any scatter.... Only 10km/h over the limit, but once he sees the detector there's no getting out of the ticket!
