Registering the battery as new and setting the Ah rate are two different things.

I was mostly referring to registering the battery as new.

What OBD2 device are you using? Can it read the battery charge histogram?

its an autophix 5900. registers battery change but couldn't see anything else on there. just said new battery registered.

I actually have that same device. It only shows new battery registered because it uses Ah learn mode. While the DME/DDE is still learning, it would have your alternator output all over the place.

There seems to be a lot more going on with your vehicle than just the over-voltage condition.

BMW charging system is complex. It is maintained by the DME. So, there are many components to check. I am simply walking you through checking each component.

its in for a recall next Wednesday anyway. something to do with the battery.

Positive battery cable connector recall.

In addition, they will most likely do a full vehicle inspection, so brace yourself.
