I've just traded my X5 4.4i in on a E61 535d and I don't regret it for a single second.
The ride/handling is much better and the interior of the E61 is much nicer than the X5 interior.
I might consider buying another X5 when the new model arrives but for now the E61 is the way to go.

Tough choices !
I traded my X5 3.0d MY2002 for a 525d Touring.
They both give a superb, but completely different, ride.
If you're addicted to the? 'king of the road' feel, stick to your X5 (in 2007 there's a new X5).
I made the change because I love the looks of the new 5 series, it has more space in the luggage compartment (I have a young daughter and 2 labradors) and has the newest (better) goodies (like I-drive, nav, etc.)
And the 2.5d engine has the same characteristics as the 3.0d MY2002, the diference is that the car weights 500 kg less?
?
I guess it all comes down in a matter of taste, there both fantastic cars.
Greetz,
Hans

I still have my X5 3.0 and haven't gotten around to selling it yet. It feels so super heavy when driving compared to my 525 Wagon. It also handles a lot better. The space in the back actually seems like more than the X5. The X5 though has the higher seat postion but after a few days I was happy with the lower seating position in the E61. The X5 also seems wider in the interior of the cabin and the feeling in the back seat. However, you wouldn't want to ride in the back seat of the X5 as you might puke. So much movement back there on accelleration, stopping and lateral movement. My E61 is night and day different from the X5. I don't like driving the X5 any longer as it is too tiring and jarring.
Don't go the 525 though, I think it is tad too slow for my tastes, but I need to get past the first 2000 km so I can go past 4500RPM. I need to go on a long trip as it seems slow although so much traffic in Taipei, don't think I need the speed. The pull off hte line with the 525 wagon is much less and slow compared to the X5 3.0, but once it gets going and on the hgihway, it pulls quite nicely. Much more of a luxurious ride than the X5. I really should have gotten the 545 wagon though that costs a whopping US$116,000. As it is my 525 was not cheap. I need to move back ot the US the land of cheap Bimmers! Can you even get a 545 wagon int he USA? What about Euro Delivery? Can then you buy what you want even if BMWUSA doesn't import it?
