Does anyone know if the 535xi (with air suspension in the back) is the same setup as the E61 M5, or does the M5 have traditional spring/shock combo? Also, does anyone know if the M5 front suspension will fit onto AWD E61?

99% certain no rear air suspension in M5 wagon since Europe has 5 series wagons without rear air suspension.
I'm in the US and dowloaded the brochure from Europe showing non- rear air suspension.
Due to 535xi having a front axels because of AWD, currently the only option I know of is H&R springs for front. Nothing else. I asked BMW NA if the front springs from a sport package Euro 5 would fit a NA 5 AWD and they could not confirm it.

According to Realoem.com yes they have the same basic structure. The M5 touring uses self-leveling air suspension in the rear as well, however, the part numbers for the air supply units, air springs and such are all different. I am guessing it would be possible to put M5 suspension in place on our 535xi's, but it would likely be very expensive.

Made even more impossible by the fact the E61 M5 has a V10 engine, whereas the 535 does not.

That has nothing to do with suspension. I don't think the rear differential is that much different to cause any trouble.

I saw a promotional video for the M5 E61, it does not lean at all in turns ... thats why I was interested in the suspension setup. I guess stiffer anti-roll bars and perhaps stiffere shock combo will due just as good. The M5 E61 looks solid on the road, that the only reason I asked.

Thanks for the replies anyways.

Perhaps the rear differential could be added to a non-M E61, but how would (for example) the front anti-sway bar from a E60 M5 possibly fit on a non-M vehicle? Many of us had the same issue with non-V8 E39 cars wanting M5 suspension upgrades.

The rear anti-sway bar is however, a no-brainer; I have an E60 M5 rear bar on my E61, and it is about 3mm thicker as I recall.

I thought that the air suspension was only for non-M models and therefore the M5 has only spring and shock combo???
Why bother with M5 suspension when you can adjust the rear suspension sensors to adjust to the height you want. For the front buy coilovers. I wouldn't go with just springs because the awd models are higher than the average and to get a nice drop it will stress too much the shocks.
