On the other, however, I'll need a plan for winter tires (either with the 172 8,5J rims all around, or with, maybe, a new set of Doppelspeiche 135s).
Anybody interested in a set of 2 Doppelspeiche 172 9,5Js? :-)

There was an Austrian guy on the forum who installed the 19" winter tyres but IMO the 18" are more than enough actually 17" as a bit narrower would be even better. I have the 245/35 18 with OEM 135 rims and I am pretty happy. I am driving quite a lot in Eastern Europe and going to the mountain skiing during winter. Never had a slight problem.

no probs whatsoever, it was fantastic.
regarding the weight index: check out what your car can take as a load. i think it is something like 1250 kg on the rear wheel. from that point of view, 93 is more than enough - because that equates to 1300kg, ie more than what your rear axle can take...

The BMW dealer said that 8,5J 172s are an endorsed option by BMW for the E61. The tires related to this choice, ie 93 load rating tires (650kg), are also endorsed, beyond the fact that there is no real other choice. The max load weight of the rear axle of my 535d touring is 1300 (w/o trailer)... the max rating of both 93 rated tires. This is ok by BMW.
I opted for these today with the dealer and will be a happy driver with 8,5Js by next week. They offered Conti SP2s. Upon my request, they also offered Conti SP3s. FYI, the SP2s were priced @ 250Euro, whereas the SP3s were priced at 245Euro. No too excessive, as the least I could find both were maximum 10Euro less.

Now, to my last question for this post...
Do you guys know who manufactures the 124 rims for BMW? I received a pair of what seem to look exactly like 124 rims with winter tires. The only problem is that the manufacturer (inner part of the rim is labelled as Alutec). Further, these rims are 8Jx17 rims; unlike those advertised by BMW, which are 18 inch rims. Could these be the real thing, or just replicas?

I forgot to say in my last post on this subject, that the 9,5J 172s mounted in the rear of my touring were, and still are, w/o spacers. As the dealer took the wheels off to replace my rear brake pads and disks this past Saturday, I saw that the tires had made contact on the inner side of the well well.
You can spot the signs of this evil in the pics. Unfortunately, they are low quality, as I only had my cell phone with me at the time.
Good thing that my new 8,5Js are on the way this coming Saturday. I'll take some higher res pics and post 'em then.
