Help I cannot get to the bottom of this one...
E61 525d manual. My clutch just feels wierd, it feels like the travel is too short and the pedal does not fully return up after depressing. Could it be the over centre spring? pivots? or something more serious like hydraulics or the clutch itself?
How do I tell? and are there any common problems in this area?

not heard about this problem before, so it must be uncommon. Pedal not returning must be a spring (easy fix), biting point on the clutch seems to be more troublesome, could be the automatic adjuster mechanism is bust (would also tally with the pedal return). Or the clutch needs replacing because it is past it's wear-point.
Difficult to say more without knowing the mileage or the car, age, history etc.

If it's hydraulic there could be air in the system or you could be losing fluid. Or it maybe a faulty master or slave cylinder. look for leaks and find out what the bleed-up procedure is.
If the clutch is worn out it would normally stop gripping on the friction plate and you'de get slippage.
I'm no expert on BMW's. I was a Volvo truck technician. So I may be talking sh**.
