This is the first 520d I have ever seen and it is a Touring too. I wander how quick and fast can it be with all the weight it has. I think that will not be so often seeing one.

In ?rebro is there a 520D E60 at the BMW dealer for testing. I didn't have time to test it, but I think it can be quite OK if you don't need any performance at all. After all it still have anbout the same power as the Volvo V70 and Saab 9-5 D-models. For a cab or so I think it can be very economical.

With only slightly less power but considerably more torque than the outgoing 520i (2174cc), I think it will perform more than adequately. I also think it will hurt the sales of the 523i petrols. Re the weight, I don't reckon it will be much heavier than an E90 320d touring. The E60 has the benefit of (more expensive) aluminium bits for lower weight where the E90 makes do with cheaper steel innards.

Oh, and nice parking on the foot path.

I spoke to the mobile Customer Services guy (twice in one day actually!!) and they are getting these in place of their current 525ds in the UK at least. He said the test around town/city centres was fine and the fuel economy was good.

I just guess that they won't sound like a nice 6 cyl.

Hi,

I haven't driven one, but based on different forums on the internet:
- It's same speed as the 525d
- It's much cheaper (insurance, fuel usage)
- It fit's best to company rules (at least in germany) and budgets
- You can get it with automatic transmission (so the "less" power on low rpm is no real issue)
and
- it just not a 6 zylinder (but not noisy at all)

I think in germany (for the budget) and in other countries (with speed limits) it's a real option and will allow a lot of people to drive a 5series who haven't tought about it before!

At least in the german forums there are a lot of people thinking and buying the 520d because of the cost reasons. At - in general - when can you really use the high power of the larger engines? For 80% of time and 80% of people, the 520d Engine would be the right choice.

Just my 2 ct.

I ordered my 520 d automatic right before x-mas, should arrive in February, will post my "experience". To me the power is sufficient. Certainly the 525 has a different sound and, more important, is more appropriate for such a car. But, at least for us, with two small kids, other points are more important (fuel, maintenance, etc).
Anyway, I am looking forward to driving it next month, black, auburn leather, comfort seats, etc.
I might be able to have a test-drive with this model in the next days...

I think it will actually sell well as a basic sales reps car in Germany....
For instance A6 touring 2TDI manual, no quattro, no leather..... there are millions of those in Germany the 520dT is a great competitor

Hi folks, I test drove a 2006 model 520d Saloon here in the UK, it is a very nice drive but it did have a 6speed manual. It has about 163bhp and good low down torque, much quicker than my outgoing A6 estate and much nicer gear change. Overall felt quick and looked the business kitted out in M-Sport guise, fantastic fuel economy, well insulated so not too much engine/road noise and good value. Hope that helps!
