Reviving a slightly old thread, but I'd love to see a write up on this. Sounds like I might want to do some exploring this weekend to see if I can locate the pump and inspect it for any splitting hoses! Any help regarding what needs to come off to access the pump appreciated!

Chaps,
I've started to get this warning and I hear the pump firing if I shut the car down and restart.

I've got a Tesco's warranty which covers this (400quid well spent now me thinks!) just want to ensure that the dealer does the right thing which I assume is:

Replace pump and hoses with new improved model. Is there anything else that needs to be done? Has the part number changed? What part number should I look for on the work done report?

Cheers,
Neil.

not to worry mate. no otherway to fix it except new part.. as long as it is done, the light will not come on and you will notice that pump noise is very minium when start up the car..

The compressor problem is a commonly known fault, I'm afraid. The root cause is the hose to the compressor that falls off/goes into pieces etc etc making the compressor to inhale unhealthy stuff causing it to malfunction and subsequently to fall off the pin.

It's clearly a design fault. BMW, we are not amused!

Edit: BMW have made an update during 2008 so the compressors now being replaced should withstand tear and wear better.

This is just unbelievable!!! Ridiculous! I have one (1) year old car with 23000km?s and today it happened to me...I had two people sitting in the backseat and when I drove 1km and it started warning this "self L system failure". I turned of the engine and when started the failure note came again... WTF
There wasn?t any noticeable change with the rideheight.

Then after a while when I started and was driving alone everything was OK. Luckily I have still one year quarantee left, so hopefully I?ll get that fixed.

I'm sure Mika himself will get back to this, but I can tell we both sat on the backseat while the car was idling and BINGO --> message came on the screen. Then when we got out, the compressor ran very long.

Ouch...

The last time that I was in for service (rear bumper removal - lol), I asked a few questions about the compressor failure issue. The answers were:

1. If the hose has failed, and there are signs that the compressor has ingested something (dirt, dust, etc.), they replace EVERYTHING.

2. Even if your car is under "warranty" a compressor failure and replacement is NOT covered!

If the compressor continues to hiss or make noise after you get out of the car, that is a very bad sign.

BMW diagnostics result on the screen... "replace compressor"
So my dealer ordered new compressor and guarantee covers it
