In response to VANOS' inquiry about Mike Miller's comments....
In Mike's Roundel column, called Tech Talk, he responds to members' letters.
In June 2011 Roundel, he commented unfavourably on the reliability of the E60 v. the E39. In the May 2011 issue, he recommended against owning a 333i without a warranty. I'm not aware of an article, per se, addressing the E60's weak points, although there may be one somewhere.

I have just changed to the E61 from an Audi allroad because of upcoming maintenance costs and high fuel comsumption. I opted for the E61, I'm hoping for cheaper maintenance and already have noticed much better fuel consumption. I purchased a 2007 530xiT CPO, can you send me the link to Mike Miller's article on the E61? I would like to read about the weak points of the E61. On a personal note, I did not want the turbo engine for fear of the same issues as the early 335i E90's.
I agree with you on the maintenance costs of the cars, the same applies to Audi.
I myself shopped long and hard for a wagon, I just don't like SUV's.

Can you pls. elaborate on this issue? From what little I've read on it, I thought that in very dusty environments, there's some sort of seal that fails and lets dust into the compressor for the rear suspension, and then the compressor fails. Is that right?
Does it affect cars with a certain mileage? Any particular year of cars that are affected / not affected (I believe the Pano sunroof seals for example got changed on LCI cars). Is there a way to check the condition?
Thanks for any info on this topic.

Thanks for the pics, and I know pictures say a thousand words, but I'm a words guy, so I'd love to hear the reply to my questions if you have a second.

As you can see from the first pic, the only "seal" around the lever controller, is a foam which is screwed on to the cover.
In my case, the broken hose results in false air suction into my level controller, together with dust and other things that should not get in to it.
My car is a 525DAT e61 2005/06 mod.
In the e39 this level controller was located inside the car, in the well for the spare wheel.
Do you have any more concrete questions?

What sort of mileage do you have on your car and do you drive on dirt / gravel roads much?
---------------------------------------------------------
OK, so if I understand correctly, the seal starts to fail typically, and dust / dirt gets into the controller, causing it to suck in that stuff instead of air and then failing eventually? Or it's a hose that typically runs from the wheel well into the compressor that starts cracking over time and lets dust in?
Trying to understand the cause and effect and which part's affected, and what the preventative fix is basically.
Haven't looked, but is there a DIY guide on this forum for it?

After 2 years with a 2000 540iAT and almost 6 years with a 2001 530iAT I'm now an owner of a 2008 550iAT. I have just had the E61 for 4 months and so far it has been running like a dream and no regrets att all about the switch.
Both models have their pros and cons and I don't believe the E61 is less reliable. A few of the standard problems are mentioned above and to be honest the E39's have its own share of issues too...
My neighbour has a brand new F11 and he misses his old E61...
