We have the autolifts and normal struts in the UK. I cannot see why you can't just replace the struts with normal manual ones, if you wanted to go that route.

My car also had that problem and it was due to low oil level. Seems to be a very common issue. On my case, below the reservoir it was signs of dried oil. I still don't understand why the system spills out the oil from the reservoir.

Anyone have details how to get to the pump? I started into it and unfortunately, BMW makes everything with thin plastic - pull the wrong way and snap. I can't find a detailed DIY.

Shouldn't be a problem. I converted mine from manual to auto. I believe it should be enough to just replace the cylinders, but you still have the to hydraulic hoses that goes to the main cylinder. You either have to remove those (and the hydraulic pump) or blend them somehow.
But before trying all this I would start with changing the hydraulic fluid in the pump. My hatch wouldn't stay up after the retrofit. After a quick look I discovered that the fluid was under the max/min-mark, so I bought new oil (not from BMW of course) and filled it up. No problems after that.
I also have an spare pump if you're interested.

Do you by any chance have a DIY on this? and how much did it cost you? my wife's tailgate struts are toast so I was thinking of retro fitting the auto open, Thanks, sorry for the revival didn't noticed the date

I'm sorry, but I don't have an DIY, but I have made a small write up.
Unfortunately It's in norwegian, but if you use Google Translate, you'll get the hang of it.
Link to Google Translate version.
All the main parts was bought from eBay (pump, struts and control module), smaller parts was bought from a BMW parts dealer.
I didn't keep track of the costs, but I would guess about 5-6000 NOK, which would be around $1000.

Thanks awt. This may seem like a stupid question, but how do I remove the panel in front of where the pump is located? I can see my amplifier back there but I don't know how to remove the panel....

Turns out the pump is behind the carpet where my Sirius Satellite radio receiver is mounted. I had to remove the receiver bracket to get to it. FYI if anyone has a similar setup in the States.
