Default Close tailgate after car goes to sleep?

On my 2009 535xi if I leave the rear auto lift gate open for 10-15 minutes (however long it takes till the car goes to sleep) and I press the close button on the lift gate, nothing happens. If I then go open a door on the car or do something to make the lights come back on, the button works to close the lift gate. Is this normal behaviour? Does the HKL module (I think that's the one for the lift gate) go to sleep and shut off the button? My button works exactly as you would expect it to if the car is not asleep.

I checked the owner's manual and didn't see anything mentioned, but same here, so must be normal operation.

Awesome, I’m satisfied if others have the same result.

This happens to mine too. I think it’s normal:
