I have a Thule set w/ aero bars on my E61. They fit nicely and look nice. Make sure and get the wind deflector... otherwise (as expected) they give off a high pitched hissing when driving.

Good luck,
Pat

Thanks.. looks like what I want. So basically you buy the BMW part for the towers and crossbars and add the Thule attachment for the bike, right?

If you can find the older version of the crossroads 450, that is what I have.

Here are a couple of pics..first one is how it looks locked up. Second one is how it attaches to the roof rails. It appears that the new ones use some sort of strap and the old ones you can adjust how the prongs go onto the back side.

Since you cant use the "newer" ones, I would really start looking at CL or ebay for them.

I was thinking about maybe going with a rear mount since they are cheaper and would go on and off quicker

What do you guys think of this?

I had one of those for my E39......great rack but as they sit on the paintwork it's going to get scratched one way or another.....stick with something that attaches in a way that does not damage the paintwork.

I've just ordered a Automaxi set up. Not bought a roof rack since 1993 when I started snowboarding but had a 205 gti and no room for 3 big guys and our stuff LOL! That was a Thule and was really good but did mark my paint a bit!

I've no idea how good the Automaxi kit is. I went for budget kit as its not going to get left on or used a lot. Seems to get a good review from what I read and for ?80 including the bars and 2 cycle carriers it seems good value.

I just ordered the BMW setup from Garry @ Newport. At minimum, I'll have the basics to add the Yakima stuff onto if I don't like the BMW mountain bike holder.

No hitch in the states so that option is out
Curt makes a receiver hitch for the USA M61. We use ours on our '07 with the Thule carrier that's now on its third wagon.

I went to the Curt site and they only show a hitch for the sedan not the 2008 wagon?

...Check out the Yellow Pages for hitch installers in your area. One or more of them might be able to locate a hitch for you. Also, a Google search found a few sites that stated they had a hitch for "all" '08 5 Series vehicles. The installed Curt hitch does not look as good as the hitches (tow bars) available in Europe and elsewhere but it does turn our M61 into a great towing vehicle and provides a receiver for our bike carrier.
