I was wondering what the best roof rack bike system is.
It seems that you also need to buy the cross bars.

I have never liked roof mounted systems. I have a tow ball mounted Thule rack which takes 4 bikes.
Really easy to load the bikes and very stable when driving

I use the bike system with automatic lifts - easy to load them. I used it on my X5 I owned before. The E60 is not that high, but it is still nice to have your bikes lifted into position.

Yes, you need cross bars.

You can buy a Thule setup without much issue. You will need to have the following parts:
450 Crossroad - these are the crossbars that will clamp on your factory roof rack
517 - Peloton - this is the bike rack that you take the front wheel off and it is designed to work with bikes with disc brakes
596 Lock Cylinders (6 pk) - you will want to lock everything to the car
Retail is probably going to be north of $550.00 USD...
Check ebay or craigslist for better deals.
good luck

Any pics of the Thule mounted on a E60?
Their website says "At this time we do not have a multipurpose rack system that we recommend for use."
BMW Accessories shows this one for $198
Then the bike attachments for another $111
They also have a "racing? bike attachment for $116 that is used with the front wheel removed and locks in at the fork.
Suggestions?
