Best achieved mpg?

Last year I did a 2000 mile round trip to the parents in the Dordogne, I'm not a slow driver and across the whole trip, including some Paris and London driving and bringing back gallons of wine and Cognac it returned 34.8 mpg. Now I have just noted tha the car was set to US gallons......... 
Any ideas what this converts to? It must be more as since I changed it, it's now showing higher MPG during normal use. Wonder if this explains some peoples low figures??

I'm about to do a trip from Copenhagen to the UK, via Germany. I am expecting around 60MPG from my V8 on the Autobahn.... unfortunately that's Metres per Gallon, not Miles 
The best we normally get out of the car on a combined city/motorway drive is around 25MPG (UK), but that's when my wife drives!

I just did a 1900km road trip in Sweden, and the average fuel economy was 7.6l/100km. Average speed was 98.7km/h.
On one stretch of the trip (Göteborg to Lund), I did the 270km in 1h42min...

Last spring, we did a 1200km road trip, and the wife drove the entire round trip (I was drinking beer and talking on the phone). She managed an amazing 6.6l/100km with an average speed of 87.2km/h. I don't know how she did it.

I just completed a drive from NJ to Atlanta ... 774 mi @ average speed of 63mph ... according to "trip computer" [that factors in stops, slow-downs for ezpass tolls, etc] though most driving speeds were 65mph - 80mph.
'07 530xi mpg = 28.6 ... bet if I had a 'd' it'd be closer to 40mpg but that doesn't factor in the higher cost of diesel in the United States.

Diesel is not that much "higher cost" over premium, and it's sometimes the same or less. Even when it's higher, it is generally only 10-20¢ more per gallon. That's only 5% !
When the engine provides 50% better fuel economy, I think it's completely silly to bring up the "higher" cost of diesel! Everyone in the US seems to do this suggesting a lack of understanding basic math.
Furthermore, the higher the overall pricing of fuel, the higher the savings by using the more efficient engine. At $2/gallon, you save roughly 1/2 what you save now gas vs diesel engine. At the prices Europe pays for fuel, their savings gained by using a diesel engine are more than double ours in the US.

In my twin turbo gas E61, I can get 28 mpg when keeping mph 60-70 and with nothing on the roof.
Ad in more speeds up to 80 plus over a mtn pass and it drops to more like 25 ish on a 200 mile out and back trip recently.
Ad a cargo box to the roof on a similar road trip and it drops to more like 22 but that's at maximum speeds allowable without getting a ticket in the US. Mostly this would be in 70-75 mph limit areas with travel speeds about 9mph over those posted limits.

My Ride: 2007 530xiT, 1964 MBZ 220SEb Coupe, 1986 MBZ 300E and a 1997 Jeep Cherokee as my cottage car.
Previous rides started with a 1947 Studebaker Commander convertible and included numerous Fords, VWs, MBZs, Saabs and, for added measure, a '61 Buick Special Wagon and Pontiac GTO.
My highway mileage is now, at 65,000 miles, about 27mpg on my '07 530xiT. The mileage drops to about 22 when towing my utility trailer. The mileage is now better than when the wagon was new when the mpg was closer to 25.
