I want to know how it isn't an 'xi'. Did someone just debadge? Did they do a RWD conversion?

I believe starting 2008, xi became just i with a separate xdrive badge on fender.

Well I have a 2009 that says “xi” on the rear and “XDrive” on both front fenders.

That's a negative on all 2008s I've seen, including my own, which says 535xi. No mention of xDrive anywhere in literature either.

As does my 2010. I got the exact year wrong, but BMW moved away from xi badging somewhere around then.

The biggest question is how the great state of Maine let this plate "a go"?

I know here in WA we have to explain what the personalized plate means.
