and yes, there is logic behind fitting them on pre-LCI cars, but I will explain that another time

Cool, I'll have to check for them when I get home! I know in my front spoiler by the fog ligths there's a hole that directs air to the brake rotors!

wow that's great (but I think every E60/61 above 520d or 520i has these brake ventilation ducts )

seriously though, its small engineering touches things like this that make us love our cars

Ah, I thought I was special b/c I had the M Sport Package, as they often add little touches like this to them.

That said, on the LCI cars it might be a motor, because of the more complicated tasks it has to fulfill.
I would be surprised if they work on magnet and wind resistance alone, if say one was stuck in start stop traffic, wouldnt this mean the radiator fans would need to kick in instead of having supplemental wind cooling?

Ive tried poking the flaps with my finger (fairly hard), but they done seem to budge.

I think its funny at best how people rely on their "logic" or "knowledge" of unknown extent and origin to argue about facts which are totally accessible on the internet.

If your flaps don't move, and your car is pre-LCI, then probably your engine was on. Switch it off and try again. If your car is LCI, you might have an actual motor in there.

I've tested it today. They actually open themselves when the motor fan kicks in. They've lifted themselves. MMitev is right

As your car is pre-LCI, you mean that the fan sucks in so much air that the air has lifted the flaps?

I don't have the flaps behind the kidney grills, but it looks like there's a second radiator down low that when the car is off, was folded down (sitting horizontal), and it looks like there's a mechanism that flips it up (vertically) at some point? It sits in front of another radiator that's already there.

I've got a 2010 MY 535 with the M Sport Pkg.

It's either that or they do have a motor. It's +30 now
