530D Sport E61 Gearbox trouble
Hi
I am new to the forum and would be grateful for any advice on a problem that I am having with my 530D.
Last year I drove my car through a small flooded area and unfortunately the engine seized. My insurance kicked in and eventually they agreed a brand new engine from BMW so this resolved that. However, in about December I suddenly became aware of problems with my gearbox.
When slowing down at a roundabout, for example, the car will slow pretty much to a stop and then all of a sudden jolt and go into 1st gear. It can be quite a big jolt. The problem only occurs as the car warms up over the day. Sometime I can use it in the morning and have no problems with it at all. However, as the day goes on it can get progressively worse. When you start the engine and come out of park into drive or reverse it will pop back into park. Sometime it struggles so hard to find a gear from park that it will stall itself. But this is not everyday.
The car has been into the garage and also to a transmission specialist. They have tested it and done 2 software updates. Initially we thought this had done the trick but within a couple of hours the problem was back.
We wondered if the problem may be related to the flood incident. When the car went into the garage after Christmas (incidentally they did not put in the new engine), they checked the gearbox oil level and had to put in around 1.5 litres of oil. There was no sign of any leak so it would appear that when the new engine was put in they did not top the oil level back up.
So we did think this had caused a mechanical problem but so many tests have been carried out that do not show the usual damage that you would have with a mechanical problem.
I had a look on google and saw that there was a lurch problem identified with Jaguars and BMW's but it seems to be more associated with the E60 and not the E61. But the problem does seem very similar.
Wondered if anyone had any experience of this, a miracle cure of any other ideas. Really don't want to have to put a new gearbox in as I don't have a warranty!
Thanks

If you are talking about a minor bump as you are stopping into traffic that's the gearbox torque converter shutting off to save fuel. It is a feature not a bug
But to notice it you can see it on the fuel consumption gauge as u are stopping the arrow climbs towards the 20 and the drops after the bump to avoid it do less abrupt stops and try to be smooth when decelerating.
To check if it is actually going into 1st that is causing the problem do it in Manual mode the torque converter switch off before going into first or AFTER it.
Check it and do tell what happened.
