I have the 2005 218ps 530d auto and it loves the taste of diesel 
Its averaging around 10,5L / 100km, mostly city. After a recent long cruise though Denmark and into Germany, its dropped to around 9,9L / 100km. Like Rysed wrote back in one of the early posts, most of it is probably down to the old automatic gear box.
My previous 2008 LCI 197ps 525d auto averaged out at 7,6L / 100km for similar driving. Just shows how much better these engines and gearboxes have become in the last few years.

your 525d was a e60, your 530d is a e61. your 530d has the panorama glassdach (whatever that is in english
- this accounts to about 40kg extra weight on top of your car), your e60 did not have one. But you are right, the newer 3.0d (3rd generation in the e6x) is far more efficient than the 1st generation you have...

...and I am typically carrying crates of beer in the back of my E61 from Germany to Denmark because of the crazy beer prices. That's probably also adding 0,1L / 100km to the fuel economy.

Maybe your car isn't getting up to temperature and so the consumption is out.
I did a 100 mile journey from Dartford to Peterborough recently at about 75 mph all the way and got about 41mpg from my 2004 E61 530D SE Auto. MY OBC was saying I could do 630 miles on the full tank. I still think I can get more if I get the main thermostat changed to get the temp up from 82 to 90C.
