Hi All
About 2 months ago I purchased a BMW E61 525d (build 11-2005) via Germany. I now imported it into the UK. Last week I purchased on Ebay a tuning device from Abrieb (I will write my experience on that in a seperate topic as I just installed it this evening. However the initial experience is great!). Once purchased I had to confirm to them the engine type and power.
For this I looked on the Certificate of Conformity (COC) on which I noticed the engine's power was 120KW (with standard engine size of 2497 cm3). I find this strange. Shouldn't the standard engine be 130KW (177 bhp)? How many Bhp is 120Kw and why wouldn't my car have the standard 130KW?

The car drives great. That's not the issue. However I was hoping anyone could explain the above?
Thanks!

120kW = 163 PS = 161 HP. I too would have thought that the engine's output was 174 and not 161. Is the exhaust turned down or pointing straight back? I assume the CoC is from BMW GB; could they have made a mistake?

No the exhaust is a straight double one. The COC is a copy generated by the UK and I have another copy generated by BMW Germany. Both state the same. Very strange.
Is there any way to finding this info anywhere on/in the car itself?
Thanks

All

I think I found it on a german site (via google.de).
Apparently (not sure if this relates to germany only) but there the 525d is also offered with a certain maximum Bhp to companies that take several cars at the same time to avoid going over the 163 Bhp limited (for taxing I guess).
So if a big company managed to order sufficient 525d's they would be able to get the squeezed engine.
Below the info (in German)

http://www.bmw-syndikat.de/bmwsyndikatforu...und_120KW_.html

Would be interesting though to understand how to get the missing 15 Bhp back?

I'm guessing it's all in the programming. What does Abrieb say about the changes they can acheive for the two different variants?

Any indication on the CoC if the car is EU3 or EU4 compliant?

You are absolutely correct. BMW offered large customers ("Gross Kunden") the "Fleet Edition" version, which was 120KW instead of 130KW. The reason was the tax break at 120KW. This reduction in power is simply achieved via the engine management.

Thanks for confirming.
OK to be honest I don't think it is a big difference. Especially now since I've installed the Abrieb tuning device which I'll give feedback on a new topic. However would be interested if my BMW garage here in the UK would be able to set the car back to 130KW again (at of course a very friendly price. Let's see)
