I actually considered a 3 series but it is "less" of a car comared to the 5. At least if you have a family with two small kids and love road trips ;-).

And it's not available with the superb automatic tail gate.

tegel you made the right decision, then put in it 3-4000kms and just chip it!

Doubt it, respect BMW engineering too much.....;-) Honestly, I think you get used to whatever engine you have, as long as the power is adequate.

One thing I know for sure is that you also get used to excessive power and after a few weeks you are not impressed anymore. Compare with fast computers, the wow-effect slowly fades. And when it's finally faded, you start to appreciate stuff like silence (computers) or why not fuel consumtion (engines). And equipment!

Our first car was an Audi A2, very impressive, top speed 190 km/h and never felt underpowered. It had a 1.4 petrol engine with 75 horsepower.

I think you've made a good choice. The sound insulation on the 5er is so good that you van hardly hear the engine anyway. The torque of the diesel, especially with the estate, will compensate for its outright lack of power. The M-Sport package is something of a bargain. I found the SE heavier and soggier to drive with absolutely appalling seats. If SE had been the only option I would have bought a Merc! Despite my misgivings regarding buying such a large car with such a small engine I have been very pleasantly surprised by the whole package's ability.

Dealer called me today and said that High Beam assist is only available with auto dim rear view mirror. I don't like that so I cancelled the high beam assist too.

Why do you want high beam assist? Is there any actual use for that option?

I personally like the auto-dimming mirror and would rather get that without the high beam assist though.

Well, I want to see what is in front and in the back. I am never disturbed by my rear view mirror glaring.

But I do not utilise the high beams as much as would have been good from a safety and driving comfort point of view, that is why I would have appreciated the auto function.

Slower than 520d?
Dont let the overtaking numbers fool u friend. These are primarily based on sticking in the same gear. So 80-120km/h in 4th or in 5th. Since u want tiptronic the gearbox will shift down when overtaking and believe me, no 520d will catch up with u then. 525i is way faster than 520d but suit yourself.
At least i would make a testdrive before u decide, good luck.

This is the most important issue! In gear acceleration is irrelevant and misconcieving with automatic cars. A 520d auto or manual has no chance against a 525i auto.

True. But I'm finding myself quite a bit quicker now than before; just floor it and the car goes, whereas before I had to depress clutch, change gear, etc.
