Can the 177bhp 520d be remapped??

Coincidtally I actually spoke to Jason about this at the time. He said the 177bhp has a completely new ECU which was designed by BMW with a 512bit encryption on it specifically targeting people who remap. For this reason, he told me nobody has managed to unlock the ecu's and at present they cannot be remapped. Iit may be worth emailing him from time to time to see if anything has changed I guess!

Hi many people refer to re-mapping the ECU simply as Tuning. You will need to find someone who has the right equipment to do this, as a normal mechanic would not usually have the tools - it needs a specialist computer to do it. The gains on a petrol engine (mpg wise anyway) would not be as good as for a turbo diesel, but you would still see some reasonable gains I would think. The best thing to do would be to search the internet for tuning specialists where you are, as there must be people all over the world who are in this business!

I have found a link as an example to show what could be achieved with your car if you can find a specialist where you live http://www.supertuning.co.uk/bmw-520...remap-225.html

Hope this helps
pretty impressive.but can u just explain how more torque, and HP can increase MPG rather then a decrease?

Its all to do with the timings withing the engine from what I understand, although I'm not an expert. try emailing one of the many companies out there who specialise in this and they will give you better answers I'm sure!

I'm getting my E60 2004 530D done with Jason at B&W Hounslow in 2 weeks so will let you know how I get on. I'm not going for anything crazy, emphasis slightly more on MPG than out and out power.

Hi boozeedoo,

It's really hard to believe that a increase in power would give better MPG.

OK, the 163 hp 2 liter turbo diesel has today 177 hp and a lower consumption
but from only a chip?

What about the CO2 and other pollution measures?
I do doubt that the chip will be "pretty much undetectable" when the car
is tested at inspection.

I chipped my pre-facelift 320d Touring up to 172hp, and the fuel economy - when driving on the motorway - improved noticeably.

Sounds strange, but it made a difference.

I have no clue what the over-priced ACS "diesel power upgrade" has done for the liters/100km consumption in my E61, but based on how I like to get on it, I would say that the economy has severely suffered!

I had my 530xd E61 remap 4 weeks ago by Evolve in Luton (Uk), and I confirm it gives better mileage and better engine response. I drive about 340miles / weeks out of which 100 miles are town, and 240 are the M4 on Monday and Friday with all its traffic jam...and for the first time ever the car did stay above 39MPG (imperial) for the 4 weeks. And I have not changed my driving habits. I did Cross check the true consumption by measuring the Diesel refill vs. miles (so as to check the saving is not solely from miscalibrated idrive...) and it did confirm the idrive. Overall fuel consumption improved 10 to 12% in normal driving conditions.

Yet it might well be that if you drive on the 'high side' (let say on German autobahn) and push the engine, consumption might go higher than before. Don't have numbers for this yet...but will.

For car performance the car definitely feels like pushing far earlier and stronger and somewhat more linear. I did not put the 'highest' package that they offer as I want to keep X-drive transmission in good shape..., but got about 40~45hp increase on my 231hp 530xd. Sufficient to get a bigger smile on my face each time I push on my right foot

Overall, yes i was worth the cost. Evidently cannot answer yet on effect on reliability but my car has about 50k Miles (80k km) and remap does not seem to have bring any error message, or any noticeable abnormality.

On the time it takes to do the upgrade: It depend on ECU version. Diesel engine using EDC16 or 17 are easy to crack. gasoline engines are harder to crack due to higher level of encryption. On Diesel the upload of the new mapping through OBD port takes less than 10 minutes. On gasoline it needs >1hr.
