![Question](https://5series.net/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
Hi All,
Apologies if this has already been answered (i had a search but couldn't find it). My car battery seems to be coming to the end of it's life now (i think its the original so is 11 years old), the car really struggles to start when cold, lights go really dim and IDrive turns off. Car takes up to 10 seconds to start.
What I would like to know is this - is it possible to install a new battery without the need to code it to the car? Is it the IBS that ultimately has the battery coded to it?
My garage wants £160 to replace and code a battery. I was looking to do it myself but can't for the life of my get INPA or DIS to work :-(
Help and advice is much appreciated

I have no idea what resources you have for aftermarket batteries, but the info and mechanical aspects of my experience linked above might be helpful.
I used CarlyForBMW app running on an iPhone 6 to register my new battery. The app requires that you have an OBD II Wi-Fi reader, which the iPhone (and app) then connects with.

I changed my battery about 2 years ago, and never coded anything, and you should not have to as long as you change to a battery with the same amp, is what I heard.

As long as you replace your battery with one of the same type (FLA or AGM) and the same specifications (Cold cranking amps and reserve amps) then you can get away with not registering the battery. All registration really does is tell the car's computer how to charge the battery.
If your battery is really 11 years old, that is a remarkable achievement! However, I suspect that someone has replaced it somewhere along the line.
