19" WHEEL RIDE QUALITY

I've read that 19's really hurt the ride quality of a 530xit. additionally, one of the major car mags recommended sticking to the 17's as the 18" option was quite harsh. how harsh are we talking here? i live in the pot hole kingdom of Minnesota. for comparison, i currently drive a 330i with ZHP and 18" wheels that are fine. and a 996 with 19's that is fine too.

Ride quality is very subjective. If you're 996 is fine on 19's, your E60 is going to feel even better.

Depends highly on your local roadways. If you're in Illinois like me and on 19's, you might as well put a jug of water in your trunk with dirty laundry in it. By the time you get home your clothes will be clean from the turbulence.

IMHO it's not the harshness of the ride but the anguish of bent / broken wheels that will keep you and your wheel insurance provider and tire shop busy!

One reason the move from 17s to 18s makes the ride much harsher is that the 17s run standard all season tires, the 18s come with run flats.

20" Alpina Softline (Classic) with Dunlop Sport Maxx non-RFT (255/35/20 & 285/30/20)
I just fitted my 19" with non-RFT tyres to my new Touring and fitted the original 17" OEM RFT set-up back on my E60... the 17" are sooo much more uncomfortable than the 19s. You feel every bump with this set-up -- even my wife is complaining about the comfort of the 17s with RFT and has lost a lot of confidence in the car's cornering ability (grip) compared to the 19" set-up.
As always, its mainly the matter of RFT vs non-RFT, i.e. the tyres make most of the difference in comfort, not the size of the rim.

Got a set of 19"'s fitted yesterday and no issues with ride quality, go for it!

For a nice family comfort the 17' non RF's are the best.
