I am upgrading from an E34 with 16 inch rims to a new E61 '08 525 xd with the 124 rims in 18 inch which is still on order

Roads here in Switzerland are generally in very good condition

I have no expreience at all with 17 or 18 inch so I am treading new ground here - any adivce appreciated

- I am worried that the 18 inch rims will be too firm ?

- do 18 inch tyres wear any faster than 17 inch ?

- Cost is not (too)much of an issue, research tells my that 18 inch tyres cost about 10 to 15% more than the 17 inch for same tire, but if they generally last only half as long.....

I still have some time to change the order so let me know quick (please)

First of all congrats on the new order!

As for the ride, with BMW using the Run Flat Tyres (RFT), that tends to impact the ride quality more than going from one rim size to the next. I changed from 18" RFT to 19" non-RFT and had improvement in comfort. If you search the forums a little on this topic, you will see that I am not alone in this respect! If you are going to change from RFT to non-RFT, don't forget to have your dealer put the spare wheel option in your boot (costs ?80,- in Germany).

I also changed from 18" non-RFT to 19" non-RFT and did not notice a difference in ride comfort. I do however have the m-sport suspension, so the ride is already relatively firm.

As for tyre wear, that is really down to the tyre manufaturer rather than size of the rim.

From a looks point of view, 18" looks better IMHO and the minor difference in ride comfort (-if noticably at all?) would be worth it for me.

I have 124's on my car and it's no problem with the comfort at all. I have 17" 138's on winter and it's also working fine. I think you should go for the 124 you have on order but make shure that you don't get them as RFT and that you get the spare kit.

Hoi Missile

Like Robert J I have 17s in the winter and 18s in the summer and advocate non run-flats and the factory space saver spare. Order it with 18s and then look for 16s or 17s being sold by someone upgrading. I needed 18s on my 535d; the 525 can probably use 16s.

Congrats with your new ride

17" probably will be too small for a big saden (Mainly becos it doesnt look good really ), so i would go for 18" without a doubt
Regarding the ride quality, 18" will be absolutely fine once you are not picking the run-flat tyres.
Show us some pics when you got the car, we love seeing new cars

thanks for all the input guys....I will stick with the 18's as ordered and get either some cheap 17's for the winter....or (ugh) some 16 inch steel rims!!!

I had already ordered the small spare tire so plan to run NON run falt tyres when the RFT wear out....I tried to talk the garage into installing non RFT but they 'resisted'.

Bling !! I am looking very much to have the nicest car in the parking lot....the competition is my "bosses boss" a 525 but that "only" has 17 inch rims and is the E60! There's also a Q7 but thats another story !!

Will surely post pics of the new car when it arrives.....

cheers

Good work, looks like you've done propper research before putting your order in. I think you've made a wise choice

Looking forward to seeing pics on the "nicest car in the parking lot"

Try to see if your delaer can just "forgett" to chek for RFT. I tried that when I ordered mine and I got spare kit and normal tyres! It can be worth a try...

That's it. I'm waitin' so much for mid/04 to mount my non RFT summer tyres. They're so much more comfortable.
