The M5 is a WRONG car: 500 HP were available from a 4.8 V8 too : the M5 has a stupid range (250 miles ?), a stupid engine (no torque al lows), a stupid weight (+100 Kg than the V8 under the bonnet ---> more understeering!) and finally a stupid tank (the tank should have 22-23 gallons, not 17) .

With 250 miles range I would have problem even here in Europe . I figure in USA, thousands miles, 250 miles, lol .
No, sorry, in the USA you use the car to do the 1/4 mile and the plane to travel 200 miles .

Aznronin, driving an M5 instead of a 545/550 is only +?1000 in fuel, not so much . But I can't stop every 450 km instead of 650, having no torque, SMG3 failures, bla bla .
You've just made a great case for owning a diesel. On which note...

I'll be shifting out of my 535d in the next couple of months and have just had a couple of test drives of alternatives. I took out a 550 M Sport (the obviously better 545 no longer being available despite me asking for one on AlexFW's recommendation! ) and it is clearly faster than my 535 from a standing start. Despite the torque of the diesel it would be unlikely that I could catch up the jump that the 550 would get in a straight-out drag. However kicking down at 60 mph the diesel feels faster than the 550, and I would think the 50-70 times would be slightly shorter in the 535d.

I also took out an M5. It is faster than either of the other two in any gear, from any speed. It is laughably, insanely fast. It also feels much tighter than the 550 (my 535d is an SE so is much softer and less controlled) and gives the impression of being very easy to throw around. It just doesn't feel as if it weighs what it does. I thought it was fantastic.

Common sense says I should be going for another diesel, especially with the increase in road tax and fuel prices spiralling out of control. But I'm going to change to an M5, because my head tells me that I probably won't be able to buy a car like this ever again. I'll be ordering next week, even tough it's 20k (Sterling) more expensive.

JMC you will not regret getting an M5. The raw performance you get as well as the space and luxury make it worthwhile. And i'm sure you'll get your share of looks and thumbs up as well. imagine how your test drive felt and now imagine having that availble to you everyday anytime you want it without a salesman in the seat next to you.

For the members that do not know AlexFW, let me fill you in on some information. For the ones who do know, they will just laugh at it as usual and give me a bunch of PMs

1. His real car that HE drives is a Mini Cooper
2. Refer to the picture below of him, look at his face. Is it worth a reply?
3. Refer to my sig for some quotes he has said

I mean this guys a joke, hes made 2500 posts of what? 90% of them are of him wishing he had a M5 so he bashes the car at the worst angles possible This picture of him is NOT a joke neither, this really is him.
well said

When comparing 545i to 535d he claims that performance is all that matters, but when comparing it to the M5 then all of a sudden torque and range are important.
this kid sounds so funny.
performance is all that matters my foot. People say this cos they can not drive.
Give a 323i to MS and he will beat his 545i.
Like I always say it not the tools that counts, it the person that knows how to use it.

I can drive a 7seater car (Honha Stepwgn) and still out run mod civics

we didnt get an M5 becaues my Gallardo has a V10 and my buddy M5 has a V10 run for run 3 times he couldn't pass me.
She didn't like the way it shifts, so we settle for a S550 shifts much smoother more like a family sedan( as to what she says)
but i would very much prefer her to get the M5, i really like the way the car shifts hard, with power, much like the lambo and i can
put her and the kids in when we go somewhere.

Ok...I don't want to see any more comments in here bashing other members. I also don't want to see anyone in here bashing the M5.

Criticizing the M5 is fine, if you can do it intelligently.

Do not post any more pictures ? real, fake, I don't care ? of other members. Keep it on topic. If there is another post in here bashing any member for any reason, this thread will be locked.

I appreciate your understanding.

How familiar does this sound to my thoughts on a very similar decision I just went through re: the 550i vs. M5 thread I started? It's almost uncanny! I like the way this guy thinks....makes me feel better about my decision.

Can't wait to hear about it when the beast arrives in a few months! And don't forget the pics!

Delivery of an M5 is now scheduled for late June. I can't wait. The expense has already started though; today I got the insurance sorted at (gulp) 1600 quid a year. Now I'm just scared that BMW announce an upgraded engine or tranny between now and the delivery date.

Somehow I got a smokin' deal on my M5 insurance....$924/year...and with the better coverage options you need. I guess it pays to be with the same insurer for over 15 years. State Farm rocks!
