Hi guys, first post and hoping for some assistance.
I recently noticed that the low pitch horn has stopped working leaving me with a nasty squeak if I'm forced to use the horn. I've been advised that I need to remove the bumper to access the horn but I'm wondering if there is any alternative? If someone could let me know precisely where the unit is located I'd be grateful.
The car is Euro (UK) spec but I'm hoping the horn location will be the same.
Thank you.

The horn is located right in front of your right front tire. You can have access to it by either A) Removing the passenger side headlight or
removing the tire and loosening the front part of the splash shield. Hope that helps bro!

Much appreciated. I'll take a look over the weekend.
To confirm, mine is a right hand drive car, so it'll be on the drivers side? Passenger side on USA spec vehicle?
Cheers.

Cardiff? snap! is your M5 black?
you might find this some help, I posted this on pistonheads a while back;
I think I mentioned that the horn had stopped working after the bumper was painted. The dealer told me id have to pay a second excess if I wanted it sorted under warranty as it was a separate repair. Apparently that's bull as the excess is simply the first £100, or £250 of the total bill.
Anyway, this weekend I decided to sort it, after some internet based education it seems the low frequency horn is a bit of a common one. Basically its a very easy fix. Bumper off is a must, even that is pretty simple.
Once the horn is removed you'll see a white plastic cap, pull it off and you'll find a small 6mm bolt covered in sealant. Remove the bolt, clean the end with abrasive and re-fit, Job done, £80 for a new horn saved! (or not as it should have been sorted under warranty anyway)

Cardiff yes, black M5 yes.
Actually decided to take a proper look at this only yesterday. Assuming that both horns were in the same location (big mistake), I removed the near side headlight and found not two but one working horn - bugger! Removed the off side headlight and found the other. Nothing obviously wrong with it so I ordered another from BMW just this morning.
Based on your message I'll take a look again over the weekend and try what you suggest. If it works I'll cancel the order for the new part and get a refund.
Fingers crossed, worth a try!

I haven't seen many around, and I saw a black one about last week. Mine's interlagos blue.
As for the fix, it worked for me, it was the passenger side that failed for me.

Mine is Opal Black, one of the individual colours - can look dark grey, black or very deep blue depending upon lighting.
Snowing at the moment - wish I'd received your reply before starting the job the other day. Definitely a bit of a fiddle to get the headlights out.
Question...what horn tone was on the passenger side, was it low pitch?
