My Ride: Undecided 2006 530 or 550, undecided on tranmission either. 2002 Porsche 911 Coupe 2002 325i Premium, Xenon

Hello to everyone! I just read about this detuned LC a few minutes ago & I'm really very disappointed at BMWNA. I changed my order from a 550 to an M5 to be delivered next month & one of my reasons for changing aside from the 500hp was the opportunity to experience LC. It leaves an empty feeling right now. Its like riding a triple crown winner with 1000 lbs as a handicap so it wouldn't go really fast. Maybe I'm overreacting but if your car can't even go toe to toe with an E55 AMG then what's the point. I told my SA that if I want to drag race an E55, I would have to go home park the M5 & take out the 911. I think its stupid! I have or "had" a very high expectation of the M5, enough that I thinking of getting rid of my 911. But now I'm having second thoughts.

HELP!!! I need someone to restore my faith on the M5 especially those who already took delivery of their M5. I know the M5 is more than just LC but I need your opinion on this matter. Thanks again!

I am also a little disappointed in the LC issue but LC does not in any way define the M5 in my opinion. It is a true road car with F1 pedigree. From any type of rolling start the Mercs are toast. Keep in mind that BMW built a engine and MB slapped a supercharger on one. With that said you can believe that some tuner will develop a chip to bring the LC up to european levels.

The "rolling start" claim may not hold up. A tuner may bring the M5 up to European levels, but it had better be Dinan, or warranty issues become a more real issue. And, Dinan is not fast to bring upgrades out. But, of course reprogramming the LC should not be to hard too do. Personally, I would buy a manual after checking into an issue or so or wait for BMW to handle the LC issue. I don't want a $90,000 car (unless given to me) that I'd have to after market in order to deal with the competition.

Thanks for your reply Reckamech/VNOD! Maybe I'll better tomorrow. I can't shake off this feeling that I have just been deceived by BMWNA. Most current owners of an E60 M5 bought their cars based on what the automotive journalist wrote about the M5. And of course BMWNA supplied them with cars equipped with european spec LC. They even gave you step by step instructions on how to operate LC.I do not remember anyone of those car magazines mention anything about a detuned LC. Remember, no one up to this point was able to test drive an M5 before making the decision to buy one. I guess the game plan of BMWNA is to keep quiet about this & hope the new owners will overlook this issue. The damage has been done! Merc 1, BMW 0.

SHAME ON YOU, BMWNA!!!

no offence fellas, but

M5 IS NOT = LC

M5 E60 is a Ferrari KILLA and no MF Merz ever can grow up 2 it!!!

That car shall be also sold as the Ferraris to get that, you need to pass a course at track with the company...

M5 is a street luxury family saloon with the racecar inside... not a drag racer car, what ever AMG makes who the >>*>** CAREZZ????

Theres a few people like 2 that have tried launch control on the m5 now. Although its watered down i think its still pretty good launching at 1600 rpms vs 4100rpms... for me I would still get it.

You are absolutely right.

I have only used LC once ( in 32.000km ).

I would feel the same way, but I am a straight-line acceleration guy--not that I don't like fast curves too. But, 99% of my driving in in straight lines and not fast curves. And, I would never take an M5 of mine on a track with curves. I also would be afraid to take on-the-edge chances with a $90K auto on the highway/country road/street curves. I think very, very few of us, and not me, would ever push an M5 to its limits. So, most of us could be just as happy with an MB--unless bragging rights are important. If I had an M5, then I would at least want to be able to tie the in-class MB's in drag races.

I'd get the m5 for the whole package, not just for launch control. The launch control on the e46 m3 is quite disappointing, but the car is still a blast.
