My E39 has a real issue with this...

1 liter every 3000km or so...

i find it irritating, because of having to buy TWS oil, and its only to be found at the dealership....

I've had my M5 for 9 mos and it seems as though every 2000 or so miles I need to add a quart - Ive enquired at various dealers and there seems to be no need for concern - "it has a race car engine and needs more oil" is the comment I get. As someone has already mentioned, good to keep a quart in the trunk. If the oil gets too low (the car really needs you to add a quart) an engine malfunction message comes across the display and also it reads "engine running at lower rpm, drive with caution" I stopped the car, added a quart and all messages went away. The week after this happened I was getting my car serviced and when I mentioned the scenario the tech said the car has so many back up messages to prevent anything going wrong with the engine. So dont worry, enjoy your car.

Just noticed on the computer of my M5 that it is using a little bit of oil, the cars two years old with 15k on its clock, Ive had the car for 6 weeks now so dont know really what the level was at when purchased..............is this a common thing??

I will monitor it from now on, if usage is a common thing is it because we drive them hard??
This was my first question on this site as well, I went through liter every 1000 miles or so and as i live no where near my dealer i would buy 5 liter of Castrol Edge which is TWS but half the price, and keep 1 liter in the boot. Very rarely did i have a chance to drive hard so i dont think this has any effect.

Just got my car back from the dealership yesterday and had the same concern so I bought an extra quart there to keep in the trunk. Paid around $16 for it. Would like to know what other people are paying for it at their dealership......

My SA tells me that TWS has been discontinued and replaced by Castrol Edge, so my local dealership is running out of stock of TWS. Note that there seems to be two versions of this oil, only one of which is specifically made for BMW M engines. I got some from Opie Oils:

Good service and a reasonable price delivered to your door.
