Just noticed on the computer of my M5 that it is using a little bit of oil, the cars two years old with 15k on its clock, Ive had the car for 6 weeks now so dont know really what the level was at when purchased..............is this a common thing??

I will monitor it from now on, if usage is a common thing is it because we drive them hard??

Yes they use oil. Mine used a litre in the first 1000 miles (little since though). It's a little bit disconcerting at first because it seems to happen randomly and suddenly. I understand the issue is that the difference between OK and low is only about a litre, and the dry sump setup means that this is a fairly significant fraction of the total. Don't worry too much about it, just keep a litre in the boot. Make sure you don't overfill the engine or it can cause significant damage.

Many thanks for that, will monitor it closely from now on.

Even it low on computer(<0.2L), you still got about 9L left inside the engine. Make sure you keep a bottle in the trunk because you never know when you might need it.

Read up on this on the M5Board. It's quite normal. Although mine has not been very thirsty for the oil, it seems to be a common issue for this car....I keep a litre in the boot just in case. I have 3100 miles on my ride now, and since my 1200-mi break-in service, it's only dropped from 1 to 0.8...not too bad in my case. I've read where some guys are needing a liter every 1000 miles.

Read up on this on the M5Board.
You can't send him off to the opposition Doc! You know they'll just tell him to "use the search"

Exactly my point. On this forum people answer questions rather than just saying "use the search", which seems to be a standard response on M5board.
