Hi guys, I'm looking at '06 M5's that are available to buy in the NY area. My question is this, how does the SMG tranny actually work? I've never driven "stick" (don't laugh) . Does it work like mt steptronic 545? Do you have to use the paddle shifters? Thanks in advance guys.

Take a look at the following thread and follow any/all links it contains to learn more about how the SMG works and if it's the right choice for you...

Thanks for the info Rudy. I just finished reading the thread. One thing isn't clear though, can the car be driven in "auto" mode without using the paddles or shifter? I plan on learning to use the SMG but I do alot of city driving. The SMG might become a pain in stop and go traffic. Thanks again!!

Well yes, the SMG can be driven in auto mode without the need to use the paddles or shifter...but...it's not like a normal automatic. It can often be jerky when it shifts but some owners claim that with practice, even auto mode can be smoothed out. (I never used auto mode on my SMG -- I always shifted manually and learned to be very smooth.)

If you plan on learning to use the SMG in manual mode, you might find yourself okay with just shifting yourself. Stop and go traffic really isn't a problem with SMG (contrary to what many people with little SMG experience say) because the hard part -- clutching -- is done for you by the car.

I agree with this statement.

The car can be driven quit nicely in D mode. The SMG takes some finesse to be smooth but with a little
learning curve it is easy to master. In city traffic I find that D3 works well, no sluggish shifts, and no higher RMP's
needed to shift. Imagine just barely curling your toes as to lifting the throttle, works good. You can always use the
paddles or shifter to manage the gear changes, this my way to drive. Just stay aware of the situation at hand while
driving, don't get behind the power curve, this is when some jerkiness might happen, sudden stop / starts seem to be handled
more smoothly in Sequential mode - manual vs D mode. Just drive the car the best way for your liking, the M5 will
bring a smile to your face in any mode

Thanks for the input guys! Now for the hard part. Finding an '06 M5 that hasn't been abused...and doesn't have SMG or VANOS problems.
