If you had active steering on a previous E60, do you miss not having it on the M5?

Don't own an M5, but have a 545i w/ sport package (including AS), and test drove an M5 for an hour a while back, and as much as I like AS, the variable ratio M5 steering would make me not miss AS--here's post with my comments:

Active steering in very nice if you're in 'parking' mode, or doing some low speed manuvering around. But the M5 steering has so much feel, and gives you such a great connection to the road, I do not miss AS at all. Plus the M5 steering is a bit tighter than my 545 was.

I've been driving an E90 525 loaner, and this steering is superb also. I have to say, I prefer having the connection to the road that direct steering gives you, at the expense of a bit more wheel movement.

Thanks to both of you. I am considering an M5 when my lease is up and I was wondering about that.

After test driving the M5 for the first time and comparing it to a 550 with active steering I would not buy active steering.

Does anyone here have a non active steering 550i?

Correct me if i'm wrong but the M5 steering doesn't have the variable steering ratio.

OK...you're wrong...!!! It does have variable ratio steering. Not active steering, but still variable ratio.

Here's a description from my post in the link above:

The M5 steering felt tighter than my car (in a good way), and is very communicative (more so than my car). The turning ratio is higher than a non-M E60 without AS, and it's a variable ratio system. The ratio increases as the steering wheel is turned away from center, as opposed to AS which is speed sensitive. Like EDC, more suited to sporty driving (again, the new Carrera has a similar system). And you can select between 2 levels of servotronic assist.
